Chapter Five · The Maturity Gap
Adoption has gone mainstream.
Maturity hasn't.
AI use is widespread. Fewer than ten percent of enterprises have scaled agents to tangible value.
McKinsey's latest survey signals show the gap clearly: nearly eight in ten organizations use generative AI in at least one business function and 62 percent are experimenting with agents, but fewer than ten percent have scaled agents to tangible value.

These figures describe different stages of adoption, but they are not a single cohort moving through one funnel.

Read the 1% carefully
The 1% maturity result comes from a complementary developed-markets survey. It is a separate signal, not the final stage of the 88% adoption sample.
Primary sources: McKinsey Global Survey on the State of AI 2025, fielded June 25 - July 29 2025 (n=1,993, 105 countries); McKinsey, “From promise to impact” (Apr 24 2026); McKinsey, “Building the foundations for agentic AI at scale” (Apr 2 2026); and McKinsey's complementary developed-markets maturity survey (2025). These sources ask different questions and should not be read as one cohort funnel.
